How to Choose the Best Hiking Shoes

!: How to Choose the Best Hiking Shoes

There are various important aspects to keep in mind when arranging a trek and one of the most important things to consider is the hiking shoes. Selecting the best footwear can make or break the success of your trip so it is essential that you match the correct pair of hiking shoes with your hike.

A lightweight and flexible shoe perfect for a short and easy day trip over a well trodden and easy route but may leave one's feet aching and you could trip or twist an ankle if hiking through rough and unstable terrain over a prolonged period, however a sturdy and well supportive set of boots might be overkill on a light and easy day trip but is going to give you all-day comfort and support on a trek up the side of a mountain.

Here are a few of the many questions it is important for you to contemplate when searching for hiking shoes:

What ground will I be hiking on?
Will you be hiking well-worn paths, bushwalking, mountain or gorge walking or difficult unchartered landscape? Will there be steep hills or mountains, and will you need to have waterproofing when it comes to crossing streams? Are you likely to be hiking by way of rough dry desert, or will you be trekking through deep damp rainforest?

How long is my expedition?
Are you planning for a day trip or an overnight hike with camping out?

What will the weather conditions do?
Will it be hot, dry and sandy or are you trekking by way of damp squelchy pastures? This will determine whether you would need light-weight and breathable hiking shoes or a set that is going to keep your feet dry!

How much weight will I be carrying?
Will you need to have additional support from your hiking shoes for the heavy backpack and also other gear you will be carrying or are you travelling light with just a daypack?Heavier, more sturdy hiking boots will offer more support for you when compared to light weight hiking shoes when you are carrying heavy backpacks full with all your camping gear.

Do I need reasonable ankle joint support?
Rough loose landscape or level easy pathways? Hiking shoes with little or no ankle support can leave you with an injury if the ground is unsteady and unpredictable but a highly supportive boot can be overkill and be unnecessarily bulky if you don't plan on going off the beaten track.

How frequently will I use my new hiking shoes?
Do you plan just one or two hikes every year or are you an avid hiker who needs very long lasting strength from your hiking shoes or boots? Whilst a great pair of hiking boots will be with you for a long time no matter your level, it's important to think about the amount of use you will get from your new pair before over-spending on a massively strong boot if you are just going to utilize them every six months yet on the other hand, if you underspend on a cheaper and less steadfast pair then they can go downhill comparatively quickly if you take them out on an overnight hike every single weekend.

"Medieval Towns and Coastal Island Villages" Texaspeyton's photos about Rhodes, Greece

Preview of Texaspeyton's blog at TravelPod. Read the full blog here: www.travelpod.com This blog preview was made by TravelPod using the TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow creator. Entry from: Rhodes, Greece Entry Title: "Medieval Towns and Coastal Island Villages" Entry: "Gladly leaving my big backpack behind at Sia's family's flat and taking a much lighter load (a small green duffel bag I purchased in Athens and my yellow Osprey daypack), I departed Athens on July 23rd with Sia for what I planned to be one to two weeks roaming and relaxing in the Greek isles. My travels during the heat of the summer through the mostly dry and rocky landscapes of both the Dodecanese and Cyclades island chains would begin as I landed on Rhodes. Before departing Athens, I had done a little research on Rhodes and Santorini thanks to the travel books Sia had on hand at her flat, but had made no plans other than the plane ride to Rhodes (which I had been turned on to by Stephen from my tour in Egypt/Greece) and a ferry trip from Rhodes to Santorini on July 29. Fortunately, my lack of thorough planning didn't limit me from seeing in the Greek isles red, black and white sand beaches, historical medieval towns and quaint island villages, as well as from enjoying much of the laid-back culture and food the islands offered. Also fortunately, my body had already adapted well to hot (100+ degree) temperatures and hotel/pension rooms with no air conditioning, so I was prepared to relax and enjoy summer in ...

Different Types of Backpacks

!: Different Types of Backpacks

Not all the backpacks are the same, or better, every backpack is designed with a specific use in mind.

If it's the first time you go for a hike you might not understand the technical differences between the types of backpacks: continue reading to better understand which features you should be looking for and what's the type of hiking backpack that best fits your needs.

Hydration Packs

These backpacks are designed to store water on your back instead of in bottles inside or on the sides of your regular backpack. You can pour some litres of liquids inside these backpacks with the downturn of it getting heavier. It's up to you to find the perfect balance and it also depends on the length of the hike and on where you are going hiking. Hydration packs have a bag which contains water and have a drinking tube for you to drink with the backpack on your shoulders. Some hydration packs have compartments and side pockets to carry more than just water.

Daypacks

The name derives from the typical usage of this type of backpack, you use it for day hikes, when you don't need the equipment required to spend a night out or to prepare something to eat several times. A pack is called daypack when the volume is below 35 litres. Most daypacks come without the hip belt because they won't be so heavy neither in full load conditions, but almost all daypacks have a chest belt which helps keep the pack tight to your body. If you are going to carry much equipment search for a daypack with a hipbelt to better distribute the loads.

Multiple Days Backpacks

No doubt this is the most used type of backpack ranging in volume between 35 and 70 litres. Many day hikers decide to buy a backpack of such size to carry more equipment even during day hikes. These backpacks and can be used both for day hikes and multi day hikes.

Expedition Backpacks

Usually more than 60 litres and with enough room to accommodate equipment for very long trips and hikes. The main difference between expedition backpacks and multiple days backpacks is in the attention to body balance. Expedition are designed with broader hip belts to distribute most of the weight of the backpack on the hips, in order to leave your shoulders lighter. The spine is also well protected by how these packs are designed with very long hikes at full load in mind.
